A Resolution Concerning Again Seeking Staff Representation on the Board of Trustees

PROPOSED RESOLUTION OF THE EMPLOYEE FORUM

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

November 1, 2002

            WHEREAS, the Mission of the Employee Forum is to address constructively the concerns of the Employees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and

            WHEREAS the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a long and great tradition of consultative governance; and

            WHEREAS the members of the staff have an important and long-term interest in the well-being and future direction of the University; and

            WHEREAS the members of the staff devote their intellectual, physical, spiritual and temporal energies to support and improve the teaching, scholarship and service functions that enable the University to carry out its mission to the State; and

            WHEREAS the members of the staff have valuable perspectives, information, and insight that will be beneficial to sound governance and deliberation; and

            WHEREAS the Board of Trustees has previously voted against staff representation on that august body, but the Forum was not afforded an opportunity beforehand to present the case for staff representation to the Board before the Board reached its final decision; and

            WHEREAS the Forum believes that this lack of information precluded the Board from making a fully informed decision 

            THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Employee Forum requests a chance to make a presentation to the Board of Trustees or an appropriate subcommittee on the subject of staff representation on the Board

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Employee Forum again calls upon the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to provide for a non-voting seat and voice on the Board of Trustees for the Chair of the Forum.
